Music Development

What is music? Here is a definition from Dictionary.com: "Music-an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and colour. The tones are sounds employed, occurring in single line (melody) or multiple lines (harmony), and sounded or to be sounded by one or more voices or instruments, or both." Music is a big part of our nature. It is all around us. It soothes, relaxes, inspires, controls, and manipulates.

To fully understand music, you must know its roots and creators. Unfortunately many records of the music of the older nations have been lost. Carvings on monuments are shown in India, Arabia, Babylonia, Assyria, Egypt, Persia and among the Hebrews; both instrumental and vocal music was known. The earliest forms of music were probably drum-based, percussion instruments being the most readily available at the time (rocks, sticks). It is known that by 4000 BCE the Egyptians had created harps and flutes, and by 3500 BCE lyres and double-reeded clarinets had been developed.

We have gone through many eras; the first being the Middle Ages. This was a period of European history from the fall of the Roman Empire in the west (5th century) to the fall of Constantinople (1453). This ended when the Renaissance began. The Renaissance is a rebirth or revival; it is the humanistic revival of classical art, architecture, and literature. It was considered to be from 1420 to 1600. From 1600 to 1750 the Baroque Age began. Anything with a complicated design can be baroque but it also refers to a style of art, music, and architecture from 17th Century Italy. Then we move on to the Classical Period which was from roughly 1750 to 1820. This was a golden age for literature and the arts. The big writers from this period include all those Greek and Roman men who wrote epics, like Homer of the Iliad and Odyssey fame, and the Roman poet Virgil who wrote the Aeneid. Romanticism (also the Romantic era) was an artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of the 18th century and in most areas was at its peak in the approximate period from 1800 to 1850. Last but not least, the 20th century was a century that began on January 1, 1901 and ended on December 31, 2000. It was the tenth and final century of the 2nd millennium.
